Squirrel Hair Brushes

An alternative to sable, squirrel brushes are soft but lack spring making them a bit harder to control. Despite a lack of spring, squirrel brushes are capable of producing a fine tip. As their name suggests, squirrel hairs are taken from the tails of Gray and Brown Squirrels.  Squirrel brushes are best for use with thin paints such as watercolors or inks.

Squirrel hair is a dark, soft, dense hair that is normally used in brushes that must hold a lot of water or that do not need spring in the tip. Squirrel is an exceptionally soft, absorbent hair. This natural material produces a brush that is very absorbent, not springy, but comes to an excellent point. Squirrel hair makes the best watercolor paint brushes without the added expense of Red Sable. They can also be used for inks and dyes, glass silk and porcelain painting. These brushes are an exceptional value because 8 of the 10 are on Clearance.
